CBSE Board Exams 2025-26: Who Can and Cannot Appear?

CBSE Board Exam Eligibility: The Central Board of Secondary Education has recently released a public notice for all students planning to appear in CBSE Class 10 or 12 Board Exams 2025, including regular students, students in Compartment/Essential Repeat, and eligible private candidates.

Notice has been released at cbse.gov.in. regarding the essential requirements for appearing in the Board examinations conducted by the CBSE.

Who Can Appear for CBSE Class 10 & 12 Exams?

The CBSE official notice states that “In the country, there are two National School Boards under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, i.e., CBSE and NIOS. CBSE is offering education through face-to-face mode, while NIOS is offering education through Open and Distance Education Mode.

Below, we have mentioned the essential requirements for appearing in the Board examinations conducted by the CBSE:

Two-Year Study Requirement: Class X and Class XII are two-year programmes comprising Class IX and Class X, and Class XI and Class XII, respectively. Accordingly, all subjects should have been studied for 2 years by a student to become eligible to appear in the examinations.

Attendance: It’s mandatory for all students to have at least  75% attendance to appear in the CBSE board exams.

Mandatory Internal Assessment: In all the subjects offered by the CBSE, internal assessment is a compulsory integral part of the assessment as per NEP-2020. It is a 2-year-long process.

  • If a student misses school, the internal assessment cannot be completed.
  • Without internal assessment results, a student’s board exam result cannot be declared.
  • Such students, even if regular, will be placed in the Essential Repeat category.

Additional Subjects: The board offers class 10th and 12th additional subjects. Students offering additional subjects will study the additional subjects for two years.

    • Class X: Up to 2 additional subjects alongside the 5 compulsory subjects
    • Class XII: Only 1 additional subject

School Authorization Requirement: Even in affiliated schools, if a school has not taken permission from CBSE to offer any subject and they do not have teachers, labs, etc., their students are not allowed to offer such subjects as main or additional subjects.

Rules for Compartment or Essential Repeat Candidates:  Regular students who offered additional subjects previously and were placed in Compartment or Essential Repeat can appear as private candidates under those categories.

If any student dont meet the essential requirements announced by the board, then they are not eligible for examinations in additional subjects in Board examinations as a private candidate.

The board will conduct the CBSE board exams 2025-2026 for phase 1 exams from February 17 to March 6, 2026, and for the phase 2 exams from May 5 to May 20, 2026. All the board candidates are advised to boost their exam preparation and meet the eligibility criteria to sit for the exam.
