CBSE Issues New Guidelines for Class Strength, Upto 45 Students Allowed

CBSE Update: The Central Board of Secondary Education has released a circular allowing affiliated schools to admit up to 45 students per section under exceptional circumstances.

Subject of the circular reads “Exemption to School(s) from alignment of Section student strength to 40 per Section in exceptional circumstances.”

This relaxation of adding students is applicable for classes 1 to 12. All the schools are strictly required to follow the conditions and guidelines made by the board. New guidelines have been released after receiving requests from the schools to increase the number of admissions.

When Can Schools Admit More Than 40 Students?

As per the official information, CBSE allows schools to increase the 40-student limit up to 45 only under a few specific circumstances, which include Parent transfers (armed forces, central government, PSUs, private sector), Essential Repeat (ER) cases, Medical emergencies, Students shifting from hostel, Academic improvement needs.

Schools also have to follow the conditions, which are that every exception must be recorded in the admission & withdrawal register and on CBSE portals (OASIS & registration). Under no circumstances can a section exceed 45 students, and classrooms must be at least 500 sq ft, with 1 sq metre of space per student, as per CBSE Affiliation Bye-laws.

Further, the schools are also advised to continuously strive to augment their physical infrastructure to the extent possible and may construct additional classrooms so that the optimum enrolment in a section is kept up to 40 students in a section as per clause 4.8 of the Affiliation Bye-Laws of the Board to ensure that the learning outcomes of the schools are not affected.
