The JEE Main exam is a national level examination, which is organised to provide admissions in undergraduate Engineering and architecture courses provided by NITs, IIITs and IITs. The exam is conducted for B.E/ B.Tech, B.Arch & B. Planning. It is conducted through online mode.

Through this article, we are providing detailed information about JEE Main Exam Pattern 2026 type of questions, marking scheme, time duration, etc.

JEE Main Exam Pattern 2026

JEE Main 2026 session 1 registration has been started via online mode. Application form has been released from 31st October 2025 and candidates can apply till 27th November 2025 till 09:00 pm.

Session 1 registration has been started from 31st October to 27th November 2025. Candidates can only apply through online mode.

JEE Main 2026 Exam dates have been announced by NTA. There will be no attempt limit in JEE Main examination. Examination for session 1 will be held from 21st to 30th January 2026, and for 2nd session, exam will be organised from 2nd to 9th April 2026 through online CBT mode.

Paper Wise JEE Main 2026 Exam Pattern

Check below JEE Main exam pattern for B.Tech/ B.Arch/ B.Plan (Paper 1 and Paper 2) courses:

Paper 1 (B.E/ B.Tech):

  • Exam Mode: The examination will be conducted through online CBT mode. Drawing test for Jee Main Paper II (B.Arch) will be held through offline mode.
  • Time: Paper will be of 3 hours. There will be 2 shifts – 9am to 12 noon and from 3pm to 6pm.
  • Subjects: JEE Main contains questions from Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics subjects.
  • Type of Questions: Objective type -Multiple Choice questions and numeric type questions will be asked in the examination.
  • Number of Questions: Question paper contains 75 questions, in which candidates will have to attempt all 75 questions. From 2025, It has been decided to discontinue the optional selection of questions from section B, candidates will be required to attempt all 5 questions without any options for selection.
  • Exam Duration: The exam duration is 3 hours. 4 hours for candidates having 40% disability.
  • Question Paper Medium: The question paper medium is in English, Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, Odia, Assamese, Punjabi, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Kannada, Gujarati, and Bengali for all centre cities. Students have to make option of language medium at the time of application process. No changes can be made later.
  • Marking Scheme: Each correct question will carry 4 marks.
  • Negative Marking: There will be deducted for each incorrect response. From this year, there will be a negative marking in Section B. -1 mark will be deducted for incorrect responses in each section. In section B, for each question enter the correct integer value of the answer using the mouse and the on-screen virtual numeric keypad in designated place to enter answer. The answer must be rounded off to the nearest integer.

Note: In section B, candidates are required to attempt all 5 questions without any options for selection.

JEE Main Paper 2A Pattern (B.Arch):

  • Exam Mode: The mode of exam for B.Arch will be online only. The drawing test of Paper 2 will be conducted through offline mode on a sheet of A4 size.
  • Subjects: The JEE Main will comprise three subjects which are mathematics, aptitude test and drawing test.
  • Type of Questions: Objective type -Multiple Choice questions will be asked in section A & section B will contain questions whose answers are to be filled as numerical values.
  • Number of Questions: There will be a total of 77 questions in the paper. To know distribution of questions, check in the table below.
  • Exam Duration: The duration of the exam will be 3 hours. 4 hours for candidates having 40% disability.
  • Question Paper Medium: Question paper medium will be Assamese, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu in addition to Hindi, English, and Gujarati.
  • Marking System: Each question will carry 4 marks for the correct response.
  • Negative Marking: There will be deducted for each incorrect response. From this year, there will be negative marking in Section B. -1 mark will be deducted for incorrect responses in each section. JEE Main Paper 2B (B.Plan) Exam Pattern:

  • Courses: The paper of B.Plan of JEE Main 2026 will be conducted for admission to undergraduate planning courses.
  • Exam Mode: The mode of exam of the paper is CBT mode only.
  • Subjects: The Paper comprises three parts – Mathematics, Aptitude tests, and planning based objective-type MCQs.
  • Type of Questions: Section A will contain Multiple Choice Questions & Section B will contain questions whose answers are to be filled in as numerical values.
  • Number of Questions: 25 questions will be there in mathematics section; 50 questions in Aptitude test; 25 questions in planning. In mathematics, 20 questions will be of multiple choice type & 05 questions answers to be filled as numerical value. There will be a total of 100 questions in the paper.
  • Exam Duration: The duration of the exam will be 3 hours. 4 hours for candidates having 40% disability.
  • Question Paper Medium: Question paper medium will be Assamese, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu in addition to Hindi, English, and Gujarati.
