The Director of Manipal Institute of Technology, Dr Anil Rana, is a former officer of the Indian Navy, who transitioned into academica in 2013. Being an alumnus of premier institutions like IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, he believes that education must go beyond placements to shaping future leaders. One of the most defining traits of Dr. Rana’s leadership is his accessibility to students and staff which encourages them to walk into office and share concerns and suggest solutions. “We want them to be confident enough to speak to the Director,” he says.
Academic Reforms and Research- Driven Learning
Under the leardership of Dr. Rana, MIT has restructured its academic courses in line with evolving AICTE guidelines. The fragmented B.Tech programmes have been consolidated into unified streams with specialised tracks such as AI /ML and Data Science. This strategic consolidation optimises all the resources. Additionally, it enhances the experience of students offering flexibility and depth.
The director has been instrumental in shifting MIT’s academic focus from traditional teaching to research informed education. Students are able to actively participate in funded research projects, consultancy work, patents and collaborate with faculty on government and industry funded initiatives.
With the main goal of providing experiential learning, MIT Manipal director asserts, “We want our students not to just learn but to contribute to knowlege,” and MIT has significantly increased its research output with the support through seed funding, publication incentives and conference grants.

Innovation, Startups and Global Expansion
MIT Manipal is building a strong entreprenurial cultute beyond the labs and classrooms. Initiatives like the Manipal Entrepreneurial Summit and the Innovation Centre have attracted investors and generated startup funding (over ₹6 crores). These have also created 100+ internship opportunities.
Further, the experiential learning is strengthened through the Centre for Outdoor Studies, promoting leadership, teamwork and resilience. Various students led projects such as – Formula Manipal, Mars Rover and ThrustMIT Rocketry have consistently excelled at national and international levels.
The global presence of MIT has expanded with over 90+ international MOUs and dual degree courses with universities like Deakin, Macquarie and ANU.
