The Sultan of Uttarakhand: Gurmeet Singh Ready for bagging Medal in Rio olympics

Gurmeet Singh ReadyGurmeet Singh, a resident of Bazpur in the district of Udham Singh Nagar of  Uttarakhand state has qualified for the 20 km long walk race for the Rio olympics to be held in 2016. In May 2011, Gurmeet Singh set a record in the Indian Grand Prix I, Patiala. He is the current Indian record holder in 20 km walk race. In 2012, he had also qualified for the London Olympics. Gurmeet Singh was one of the three Indian athletes who qualified for the 2012 summer olympics in 20 km race walk event clocked in 1:22:30 .

Gurmeet has the similar story like Salman’s Character in the film “Sultan”. In the movie Sultan, Salman Khan played the character of a wrestler, who falls in love with a beautiful girl Aarfa, who was also a wrestler. Gurmeet Singh has similar story. He is also a sports person who falls in love with a girl who also belongs to the same game. Gurmeet met his soulmate, Deepmala Devi in the sport.  Deepmala is a Maripuri girl and a 20 Km race walker.

Gurmeet Singh created history by becoming the first Indian athlete to clinch a gold medal in the Asian 20km Race Walk Championships. This is the first time record in 34 years that an Indian won a gold medal in Asian Championship or Asian games event. The 30-year old Gurmeet clocked 1 hour 20 minutes and 29 seconds beats a Japan’s Isamu Fujisawa (1:20:49) in the last 5 kms. After winning the Asian title, he had qualified for Rio Olympics 2016.

India has created a history with participation of around 100 or more Indian athletes in Rio Olympics 2016. The men’s 20 Km race walk event is scheduled to be conducted on 12th August 2016.
