R.G Kar Medical College and Hospital was established in the year 1886. The institution offers a variety of undergraduate courses in nursing, medicine and related areas and offers postgraduate courses in all the basic and clinical medical super-specialties and specialties. The institution is affiliated to University of Calcutta and approved by Medical Council of India (MCI) New Delhi.

R.G Kar Medical College and Hospital offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the medical field. The institution offers undergraduate courses in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme and postgraduate courses in MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery) programme. The duration of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme is four and a half years with the compulsory rotational internship training of one year while the duration of the MD and MS courses are three years.
