UPES was established in the year 2003 through UPES act of the legislature of Uttarakhand. Approved by UGC, UPES is the first university under the Public-Private Partnership. As per NIRF 2024 Rankings, UPES is ranked 46 in India, 28 in Law, 41 in Management and 42 in Engineering category. Also, the university comes among top 50 institutions under the Innovation category.
UPES has received 5 stars on Employability (placements), by globally acclaimed QS Rating. As per the QS World University Ranking 2025, UPES is ranked No. 1 private university in academic reputation in India placing it among top 3% universities globally. The University is recognised by the DEC and BCI.
UPES is a member of AIU and IAU and awarded as the ISO 9001:2008 & ISO 14001:2004 certified institutions. Campus:
The UPES campus is situated in P.O. Bidholi via Prem Nagar in Dehradun, the district of Uttarakhand. The university is spread over in 42 acres of land in the Dehradun at the foothills of the Himalayas. Nearest bus stand to UPES is ISBT Dehradun which is 23km away from campus. The railway station is located at a distance of 18 km away & Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun is the nearest airport located 48 km away from UPES.
The University has implemented SAP for its operation. It is associated with FICCI to start National Knowledge Functional Hub. It has launched a Nano-Satellite recognised by NASA for its efforts in Aerospace.

The university organises in-campus PEP (Personality Enhancement program) for students to develop a positive outlook and gain several skills necessary for their time employability at the university.
