Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) is popularly known as NIT, Nagpur. The college is amongst the best engineering colleges of the Maharashtra state. VNIT was previously known as Regional college of engineering, Nagur and was established in the year 1960 in Nagpur district of Maharashtra. The college was later renamed in honor of great engineer and planeer Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. The college started functioning in the year 1960 as the joint venture of government of Maharashtra and government of India with the objective of promoting engineering education in the country. The institute was declared to be a deemed university status by UGC from june 2002, and is considered as the institute of national importance by the act of parliament commonly known as National Institute of Technology Act, 2007.
VNIT, Nagpur is spread in a sprawling campus of 215 acres. The college campus is situated near Ambazari Lake, in Nagpur (Maharashtra). The colleges campus has good infrastructure and provides all major facilities to the staff and students. The college is well connected to all means of transport, with a distance of 8 km and 8.5 km from Nagpur railway station and Nagpur airport respectively.
