Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT Roorkee)

Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT, Roorkee) is a fully government and one of the most sought institutions of engineering and technology. IIT, Roorkee has been started in the year 1847 as the first engineering college in British rule. It renamed as the Thomson College of Civil Engineering in the year 1854. The college was affiliated to the Calcutta University in its starting years. In the year 1949, it has been awarded the status of the university as the first technical university of free India and renamed as University of Roorkee. In the Year 2001, it has been declared as the “Institute of National Importance” and renamed as the present “Indian Institute of Technology”. The IITR is administered by the IIT Council headed by the chairman of the Ministry of HRD. It is approved by the AICTE and Council of Architecture.

Campus:

The IIT, Roorkee is sited on the National Highway-58 (Delhi – Dehradun Road) and NH-73 (Delhi – Haridwar Road) in the heart of the City Roorkee in District Haridwar, Uttarakhand. The campus is well-connected by the roads and rail network. The campus is placed on the Amritsar – Howrah Rail Route. The campus is spread over in 356 acres of land situated on the foot hills of Shiwalik Range and the gateway location of the pilgrim location as Rishikesh (45 km) and Haridwar (30 km). The IITR is just 200 meters away from the Roorkee Roadways Bus Stand, 2.5 km from the Railway station and 180 km from the IGI Airport, New Delhi. The nearest airport is at Jolly Grant, Dehradun.

Programmes:

The IIT, Roorkee conducts Bachelor Degree courses & Integrated Degree courses in 11 engineering branches and Master Degree courses in 23 disciplines in the field of engineering, technology, architecture & planning, management and computer application. Students, Faculty & Staff:

The IITR has more than 4200 student’s strengths in all departments. The annual intake capacity of the campus is more than 1450 students of all programmes. The campus has a healthy ratio of students and staff at (2.6:1). The IITR has more than 350 faculty members and around 1220 administrative and supporting staff from all departments.

Facilities:

The campus of IITR is housed in the heritage buildings, academic departments, hospital, 12 hostels, messes, community centre, banks, a swimming pool, 3 sports stadium, outdoor sports facility, yoga Bhawan, dairy, students’ clubs, huge library, cafeteria, guest house, railway reservation counter and an institute child care centre to take care of the children of the women employees.

Activities:

Apart from the educational studies, the IITR campus conducts the three clubs as hobby club, UG club and PG club. The students and faculty organize the trip of the nearby villages for social work. The campus organizes the NCC, NSS, HEC, IMG, SPIC MACAY, cultural councils and technical Societies which include the co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

Placement:

The training & placement of the IITR provides the summer training, industrial internship, guest lectures, alumni talks, students’ development programme, soft skills programme, and pre-placement talk for the students.
