NIRF Rankings 2025 has been released on 4th September 2025 by the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan.
In overall category, Indian Institute of Technology Madras tops the ranking followed by Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
In University Category, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore tops the ranking followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal.
In Engineering Category, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay secured Rank 1, Rank 2 and Rank 3 respectively.
In Management Category, IIM Ahmedabad tops the chart with rank 1 followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode.
This year’s rankings have been released across 17 categories – overall, SDGs institutes, universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, open universities, skill universities, and state public universities.

NIRF Rankings 2025: Latest Update
This year, the ranking system is expected to undergo a few changes, as per various media sources, a new category and an enhanced focus on research output is expected to be introduced from this year onwards.
Earlier, in response to a petition highlighting alleged malpractices and lack of transparency in the NIRF rankings, the Madras High Court issued an interim stay on the release of the NIRF 2025 rankings in March.
What’s New in NIRF 2025 Rankings
Some of the key changes is likely to be introduced in the NIRF 2025 rankings from this year onwards:
Introduction of New Category
- Media Reports suggest that a new category on Sustainability will be added in ranking parameter.
- Institutions will be assessed on their adherence to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Negative Marking for Research Retractions
- For the first time, institutions will face penalties for retracted research papers.
- Negative scores will be applied under the ‘Research and Professional Practices’ parameter.
- Based on the number or percentage of retracted publications using a specific formula.

The NIRF rankings was Introduced by the ministry of education in the year 2015, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) evaluates higher education institutions across India using a structured set of performance metrics.
